Why Are My Windows Still Foggy After Cleaning? Seal Failure Explained

If your windows still look foggy or cloudy after a good cleaning, the haze is almost never dirt. Most of the time it's one of three things: moisture trapped between the panes (a failed seal), condensation, or mineral etching on the glass. The quick way to tell them apart: wipe the glass on both sides. If the cloudiness doesn't wipe away, it's inside the window — and that's a seal problem, not a cleaning problem.

What a Failed Window Seal Actually Is

Most modern windows are insulated glass units: two (sometimes three) panes of glass separated by a spacer, with a sealed air or gas-filled gap in between. That sealed gap is what gives the window its insulating value. Over time, the seal around the edge can wear out from years of Minnesota temperature swings, sun exposure, and the constant expanding and contracting of the frame.

Once the seal fails, moist air gets into the gap. When the temperature drops, that moisture condenses on the inside surfaces of the glass and leaves a foggy, cloudy, or streaky look that no amount of wiping can reach. Over time, minerals can leave a permanent film behind, which is why the haze sometimes stays even on dry days.

How to Tell Where the Fog Is Coming From

A simple two-minute check will usually tell you what you're dealing with. Wipe the inside of the glass with a dry microfiber cloth, then wipe the outside, and see what changes.

  • Fog or droplets you can wipe off the inside: that's normal condensation from indoor humidity, common on cold Twin Cities mornings.
  • Fog or droplets you can wipe off the outside: that's exterior condensation, which can happen on energy-efficient glass on cool, humid mornings. It's harmless and a sign the glass is insulating well.
  • Haze or moisture you can't wipe off from either side: that's moisture between the panes, which points to a failed seal.
  • A rainbow-like or milky film that stays after cleaning, with no moisture between the panes: that's likely mineral etching or hard water damage on the surface of the glass.

Signs Your Window Seal Has Failed

A failed seal rarely happens overnight. Watch for these common signs:

  • Cloudy or foggy patches that return no matter how often you clean
  • Water droplets or a hazy film trapped between the panes
  • Fogging that comes and goes with the weather, worse on cold mornings or hot, humid days
  • White or chalky mineral deposits visible inside the glass
  • A window that feels draftier or makes your heating and cooling work harder

Can Cleaning Fix a Foggy Window?

Not if the fog is between the panes. No cleaner, squeegee, or professional technique can reach inside a sealed unit, and we won't pretend otherwise. Window cleaning removes dirt, pollen, bird droppings, hard water spots, and grime from the outside and inside surfaces of the glass. It can't repair a broken seal.

What cleaning can do is help you diagnose the problem. Once a window is truly spotless, it's much easier to see whether any remaining haze is on the surface or locked inside. Our crews often spot failed seals during a regular cleaning, and we'll point them out so you know what you're looking at.

What to Do If You Have a Failed Seal

The good news is that a failed seal usually doesn't mean you need to replace the whole window. In many cases, a window or glass company can replace just the insulated glass unit and keep your existing frame. It's worth getting a quote or two from a local glass or window repair specialist, since the right fix depends on the age and type of your windows.

It's also worth checking whether your windows are still under warranty. Many manufacturers cover seal failures for a set number of years, so look up your window brand and installation date before you pay for anything out of pocket.

Why It's Worth Cleaning First

Before you call a repair company, get the glass properly clean. Hard water film, pollen residue, and years of built-up grime can all mimic the cloudy look of a failed seal. A professional cleaning rules out the easy explanation, so you only pay for a repair if you truly need one.

A clean window also makes your home look better and lets in more natural light, which is the reason most people call us in the first place.
